COURSE DESCRIPTION
CTE STEM Robotics course - Science Technology Engineering Math
Students will explore Technology, Coding, Google Drive-Chromebooks and Digital Citizenship.

STEM is a course for students to explore science, technology, engineering and math all in one curriculum. This course offers an innovative approach to learning in which students use problem solving skills to tackle hands-on learning activities. Skills in this course will improve critical thinking skills and will propel students toward a successful career in the STEM fields.

This is a beginning course in robotics. We will be utilizing Lego Mindstorm kits, Mindstorm software and various Lego Robotics materials. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to basic programming as well as problem solving strategies. This course will involve students in the development, building and programming of a LEGO Mindstorm robot. Students will work hands-on in teams to design, build, program and document their progress. Topics may include motor control, gear ratios, torque, friction, sensors, timing, program loops, logic gates, decision-making, timing sequences, propulsion systems and binary number systems.

UNITS:
Unit 1 - Digital Citizenship and Coding
Unit 2 - Chromebook and Google Drive
Unit 3 - STEM Robotics  - Introduction
Unit 4 - STEM Robotics - Circuits & Computers
Unit 5 - STEM Robotics - Hardware, Software, Firmware
Unit 6 - STEM Robotics - Get Moving
Unit 7 - STEM Robotics - Taking Turns
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn, understand and know the following -
  • Google Drive - Chromebooks and Digital Citizenship practices
  • How to collaborate in groups and teams
  • How to design robots for specific activities and scenarios
  • How to use Mindstorm programming software
  • Gears, pulleys, torque, friction, timing, sensors, and program loops
  • To design, develop and complete robotic activities and challenges

MATERIALS:
Students will need a pen/pencil every day and student Chromebook.

GROUP ACTIVITIES:
Students will be working in groups on a regular basis. Students are expected to be an active member of each group, participating regularly. Each group activity will have an individual portion as well as a group portion and group members will be evaluated by their peers.

COMPUTER HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE:
All students will be expected to take care of and respect all school computer hardware and software while in their use. Students will have access to HP computers, MINDSTORM software and Lego Mindstorm Lego kits. Damages to any computer equipment by a student will be charged to the student. Students also understand that all software used for this course are the property of Tumwater School District and students are not allowed to make copies, share or change programs in any way.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
Grades for iRobot are placed into three categories

BSKL - Basic Skills - 21st Century Skills 33.3%
BWH - Business Work Habits - 33.4%

EXPECTATIONS
These four words frame the expectations for Classroom time
  • Think - Be a thinker - Ask three then me - Peer 1 - Peer 2 - Google
  • Respect - Equipment - Teacher - Co-Students - Administration - Raise your hand if you need help
  • Honor - Honor others & everyone's unique individuality - Groups succeed thought individual achievement - Be Kind and Honor each other in your actions.

The phrase “I don’t know” is not allowed in this classroom. STEM is a new and exciting area for all of us so we might not know YET but we will work together so that we do.

BUSH MIDDLE SCHOOL - iROBOT

Entering the LAB….
  • Enter lab quietly, carefully, & on time.
  • First Five - Look for your Daily To Do - on Board
  • No food or drink in the lab.
Exiting the LAB…
  • Check your area for Lego Pieces
  • All Lego Pieces go back in kit
  • Return Kits to storage location
  • Return HP to Docking station

LATE WORK OR PRE-PLANNED ABSENCE:

We will spend a lot of time together in class discussing topics related to technology. Most work will be completed in class. If you are absent, you will be given a reasonable amount of time to get your assignment in. Generally you will be given the # of days you were absent to complete you work.  Late work will effect your Business WOrk Habits grade. As in the workplace, there are natural consequences for turning in late work. You will lose 10% of points each day if it is late. If you know you will miss class ahead of time, please let me know.
